Changing Car Spark Plugs

Similar to other engine parts, spark plugs are subject to wear and tear. Without the proper maintenance, a spark plug will start misfiring resulting to difficulties in starting your car. According to experts, a car spark plug must be changed every 24 months or 30,000 miles to maintain fuel economy and engine performance. Changing spark plugs is not a hard task. As a matter of fact, it only takes a few minutes and you can do the job by yourself. Follow these simple steps on how to change spark plugs:

  1. Before you remove the spark plug, make sure the engine is not hot. Let it sit for few hours to ensure it is cooled off.
  2. Open the hood and disconnect the battery. Then, clean the area of spark plug. It is located near the engine. Clean this part so that no debris will fall when you remove the spark plug.
  3. Remove the spark plug wiring. It has a rubber plug covering. You need to twist and then pull it off. Be careful on removing it. You might pull it harder and damage the wiring.
  4. Afterwards, use a tool to remove the spark plug. A socket-wrench is commonly used to unscrew the spark plug. Locate the spark plug using the wrench then carefully unscrew it.
  5. After removing the old spark plug, it's time to plug the new one. Spark plug varies depending on the size of the engine. So before purchasing or using any spark plug, it's better to check your car's manual to make sure that you are using the right spark plug.
  6. When you have the spark plug, you need to lubricate each plug on the threads before plugging it. Then, hand tighten the spark plug in place. Use the wrench to tighten it much better.
  7. Lastly, place back all the wirings and spark-plug cables. Test and start the engine to make sure it's working properly.
