Tips On Traveling With Your Pet

Traveling with your pet for a family vacation seems to be a good idea. In this manner, your pet will enjoy the beauty of the outside world and explore other places. However, traveling with your pet poses a number of problems and challenges. Since pets don't act like human beings who can complain if they feel something wrong, it is the owner's responsibility to know all the things that your pet might need along the course of travel.

Here are some tips that you can follow when traveling with your beloved pet:

  1. Determine if your pet can really travel in a car without becoming sick or stressed. Your pet's appetite, energy, and disposition may change in an unfamiliar environment. Try to practice a short trip around your area. Consult a vet and ask if your pet is in good condition to travel. If not, better ask for medications that your pet might need to travel comfortably. Don't also forget to ask for any vaccinations and health certificates. Bear in mind that some states require papers and necessary documents for pet travel. You might also want consider taking to your pet to a groomer. Don't forget their pet tags or consider having your pet microchipped for identification purposes.
  2. Prepare the things that you might need for your pets. A cat, for instance, should be in a cat carrier for security purposes and to prevent her from crawling inside your car. Bring some foods and drinks. Pack a simple first aid kit that you can use in in case of an emergency. Dogs should always wear leash and collar. You must also bring a portable kennel.
  3. When you're already on the road, that's where all the unexpected things happen. Remember not to allow your pets to take out their heads on the windows. They must be placed in the designated seats, not on the passenger seats with air bag or in a driver's lap. Consider having seats specifically designed for pets on your car.
  4. Frequent stop is important for pets. There must be a short potty break and exercise time throughout the course of travel. Always check your pet if they are comfortable and don't leave them alone.
